Several months ago my Mom was doing an activity with her students in PE and hurt her knee. She took it easy and the knee seemed to be ok...for a while. She started getting some pain in her knee but she's a toughy and powered through it until she started having weakness in her knee and her knee actually gave out on her in the parking lot at school. After a couple of appointments and tests they determined that she has a tear in her medial collateral ligament (MCL) and a cyst that had developed behind her knee that was about the size of a lime. After sorting out some medical issues, they scheduled the surgery. She went in and they repaired the MCL and cleaned up her meniscus which was a mess as well and drained the cyst. She had a couple of days of relief and then the pain came rushing back and her leg was swelling and seemed to be very warm. After spending the day in hospital, they determined that she had a blood clot. It was what they called a spider clot because the clot was in multiple veins. Although they were obviously concerned, the blood clot is below her knee which makes it not an immediate treatment intervention. They monitor it with a series of ultrasounds and track the dissolving process. We will keep our fingers crossed and pray that things keep moving in the right direction of her recovery.
