Balboa Bay, The HBC 15s teams reach top division
December 11, 2011No team was involved in a match like Balboa Bay 15s during Sunday’s SCVA Boys points tournament at the ASC.
Balboa Bay happened to be on the wrong side of the result, but would have a chance to atone for it later in the day.
That came with a one-game playoff victory over The HBC 15s in the 16s and Under Division 1B final. The HBC 15s had been 2-0 this season against Balboa Bay, including a 25-22, 26-24 victory earlier Sunday in pool play.
Balboa Bay gave up a pair of 15-point runs in both games to allow The HBC to rally back and win the match in improbable fashion.
Both Balboa Bay and The HBC will move up to Division 1A after Sunday’s efforts. They will be the only two 15s teams in the top 8 of the 16s and under division.
Balboa Bay 16s defeated Shorebreak 16s, 28-26, in the Division 1A final.
“We had a tough start,” Balboa Bay 15s coach Greg Ford said. “We had big leads (against The HBC) in Games 1 and 2. Those are character building games. You have to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself what you can do to step it up. You could see the result of that different attitude in this match.”
The HBC was the top-performing 15s team at last weekend’s SCVA Boys Holiday Classic.
The HBC was the only 15s team to finish in the top 8, ending tied for fifth. It went 7-1, with its only loss to Baja 16s in the quarterfinals. Baja 16s also beat The HBC 15s in pool play on Day 3 of qualifying.
SMBC 15s is the only other team to beat The HBC 15s this season, doing so in a one-game playoff on Day 3 of qualifying.
“The goal was to move up,” The HBC 15s coach Adam Cutrell said. “The guys are excited to go play against the big boys.”
Balboa Bay 15s’ season has been just as solid as The HBC’s.
Balboa Bay’s only other loss to a 15s team came to SMBC in pool play on Day 3 of qualifying. Balboa Bay’s other losses this season have all been to 16s teams from Shorebreak, MB Surf, The HBC and Balboa Bay.
“Beating a team like The HBC shows what we are capable of,” Ford said.
